Landslide in Riau Islands: 10 Dead and 42 Missing
A landslide disaster struck Serasan District, Natuna Regency, Riau Islands on Monday, March 6, 2023.
NATUNA - The Head of Data, Information, and Communication Center for Disaster Management at the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Abdul Muhari, stated that the incident was caused by heavy rainfall and unstable soil conditions.
As a result of the disaster, 10 people have been reported dead and 42 others are missing. Additionally, 1,216 other residents have been displaced.
"We are trying our best to continue to contact and obtain information related to this disaster. We will continue to monitor and provide information periodically," said Muhari.
"Difficult access and network factors also hindered the team in reporting data, so data updates have not been maximized," said the Head of Emergency Affairs, Pusdalops PB and Logistics BPBD of Riau Islands Province, Junainah.
She explained that the weather conditions, difficult access, and disrupted telecommunications networks also hindered the search and rescue process. Furthermore, the data on the number of deaths may still change as the evacuation process is ongoing.
"All elements, starting from BPBD, Basarnas, TNI, Polri, and volunteers are still in the evacuation process. The network is disconnected, so the latest report is still unclear," Junainah added.
Previously, the Data, Information, and Communication Center for Disaster Management at the BNPB had tried to contact several parties at the Natuna Regency BPBD, including the executive head, but failed to connect.
Meanwhile, local residents and officials are still working to evacuate and search for the missing victims. One resident, Ridwan, who lost his child in the disaster said, "We hope the team can find my child soon. We are still praying and hoping that he is safe and can return to the embrace of his family."
